Sluban is virtually identical to Lego. However, Sluban is a cheaper competitor brand – one of several alternate building brick brands. These are all compatible with Lego and designed to fill model and theme niches that Lego has not concentrated on (such as ‘Military’) and at a better price.
Everyone is familiar with Lego. The brand is household name around the world. Since few people had heard of Sluban bricks until relatively recently, many ask how they compare to Lego.
What are Sluban toys?
- Designed for children ages 6 – 12, Sluban themes include ‘Military’, Police’, ‘Car Club’, ‘Girls Dream’, ‘Model Bricks’, ‘Aviation’, ‘Fire-fighting’, ‘Construction’, and many more.
- Sluban themes, like Lego, also include various ‘pull-backs vehicles’ that run forward automatically after the vehicle in pulled back.
- Sluban is a cheaper alternative to Lego and has been on the market since 2004.
- Sluban is compatible with Lego and other brands of ‘copycat’ building brick toys manufactured as alternatives to Lego.
With many of the Sluban models almost identical to Lego, why choose Sluban over Lego (or visa versa)?

Sluban vs Lego
Let’s see how Sluban stacks up against Lego:
Sluban is Cheaper:
Sluban is more affordable than Lego in general. Considering how similar Sluban toys are to Lego, and how well the two brands of brick toys go together, this is probably the biggest advantage that Sluban has over Lego.
Sluban vs Lego Quality:
- Lego seems to come out on top for durability and quality in many reviews. The plastic used for Sluban is somewhat lighter and more likely to get scratched. Sluban model accessories are sometime a bit more flimsy – and so more likely to break off
- However, Sluban does equal Lego in one very important respect:. Sluban can be fitted and pulled apart just as easily as Lego – with other Sluban bricks or with Lego bricks.
Sluban Themes and Models:
- Sluban models look more like non-brick model cars, tanks and planes.
- Military theme models are not always considered ideal for young children.
- Sluban’s ‘Girls Dream’ themes are very gendered
Sluban Model Instructions: Lego instructions are generally reviewed as easier to follow.
Besides the brands Military theme (for which it is best known) there’s no major difference between Lego and Sluban. They are the same type of toy. Children (and yes, adults too – even though these toys are designed for children) can build and play with them in the same way. They can also be used together. The bricks fit together well, if not perfectly.
In conclusion, Sluban may not be 100% as good as Lego, but is perfectly good alternative to Lego as it is more affordable. The quality may be slightly less than Lego, but Sluban is generally rated as offering good value for money.
Sluban a stepping stone to coding:
Sluban building blocks and pattern blocks, are a great tool for introducing young children to the concepts of coding. Coding involves breaking down complex tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, and then putting those steps together in a specific order to achieve a desired outcome. Building with blocks requires a similar approach, as children must break down their design ideas into smaller parts and then assemble them in a certain order to create a structure.
